Paul Harraka made a daring late race pass on Cameron Park’s Jason Romero (No. 8) on May 2 to win his second NASCAR championship race at All American Speedway in Roseville. Harraka, driving the No. 16 Bill McAnally Racing Toyota, passed Romero on Lap 92 of the Toyota/TRD 100 Late Model race to win the event.
“We had an awesome race car. It was staying patient that did it. Bill McAnally, my car owner, was spotting for me and that’s all he was preaching to me was, stay patient, stay patient,” Harraka said. “I picked a car off here, a car off there, got to the No. 8 and just ran him and ran him, and he left a hole open and I jumped on it. He tried to slam it back, but it was too late. We had a good race car; when you get inside 10-to-go and you get opportunities like that, you gotta take them. It’s awesome to be one of the few Toyotas in the field, but yet to win the TRD Toyota 100.”
“My car wasn’t there,” said Romero, who led the entire race up to Lap 92 and ended up third at the end after Gary Glenn made a pass to take second place. “It was a little tight getting into one and (the other drivers) behind me could see that, so they knew where they could take me.”
Laura Hayes (No. 22) ran second for 36 laps of the race until her car spun on Lap 79 after contact with Glenn.
“Tonight was awesome until that accident happened,” said Hayes, who eventually finished eighth. “Everybody was checking up a bit going into Turns 3 and 4, and I hit No. 50 (Glenn), and I got him a little sideways. I had the opportunity of getting underneath him so I did. I was on the inside and I don’t know if his spotter didn’t see and didn’t tell Gary that I was there or not, but he came down on me and I kinda got out of whack. But that’s racing. You know it happens.”
