Faber Happy in WEC
The UFC doesn’t offer a 145-pound weight class
Published: May 15, 2008

Fans wonder why an athlete as dominate as Urijah Faber – whose only loss came in September of 2005 – would stay in the WEC instead of jumping to the better known UFC. The answer is simple: He has to.

The UFC doesn’t offer a 145-pound weight class. And he’s the main reason it doesn’t.

“I’m a small 145-pounder,” Faber said. “The next weight class up is 155 and that’s what they have in the UFC.

“The way this sport has been, it’s a business. I had an offer to fight in the UFC and another offer in one of these brand new organizations some time back. It was the WFA (World Fighting Alliance), and at that time, was for three times the money and they were going to make a weight class for me at 145. So instead of going to the UFC for chicken scratch and fighting guys bigger than I was, I took this other opportunity with a lot more money. But that show went out of business directly after their first show.”

So Faber landed back in the WEC with an extensive fight contract. When Zuffa LLC, which also owns the UFC, eventually purchased the WEC (and the WFA) in late 2006, it owned Faber’s contract, but instead of sending him to the UFC, it used him – and still does – to help the WEC grow.

“Zuffa bought an organization that I already had the belt for in the WEC, and bought my contracted fights with the other organization,” Faber explained. “They want to turn the WEC into a rival with the UFC, and they said they wanted to use me as one of the vehicles to get them on top.”

A UFC pay-per-view event attracts millions of viewers each month. But the “Super Bowl of MMA” focuses on bigger weights, for now. So Faber makes his home in the WEC, where his fights are the biggest draw for the organization, and where he’s made his name as the man to beat in the featherweight division.

“I’m like a big fish in a little pond,” he said. “I’m probably one of the main draws out of the WEC.”

His next opponent, veteran Jens Pulver, fought at the UFC level at 155 pounds before deciding to drop back down to his natural 145-pound class – where he is 8-0 – to compete in the WEC. Fighting up a weight class to gain notoriety became difficult, as was apparent in back-to-back losses.

Although Faber knows he can compete with the 155-pounders, he’s happy right where he is, on top of a heap of talented athletes his own weight and still in the national spotlight.
“I’m just enjoying that I get to fight professionally, make a living, hang out with my buddies all day, eat good food and travel,” he said.

“I’ll fight in the UFC, the WEC, in the ABC, I don’t care,” Faber laughed. “Just give me some money and let me live the good life.”

"Hey Dannie-boy, you'll get another chance to watch the fight and prove me right next Wednesday. Faber is famous for going all out, but for 3 1/2 rounds, he went slow against Pulver, after nearly having him out on his feet in round 2. You tell me why."

"I am a mma fighter and i know what it takes to get in the ring and i can watch a fight and tell who is slacking. Uriah didn't slow down he stayed the same, to be smart and stay away from jens's left hand. Further more any ####### can spit words if you think you got what it takes then join a camp and go for it other wise shut-up and watch the pro's do it"

"Hey robbie if you saw penn crush pulver, you saw a better fighter than faber - at least by that result. I don't care what you think you are - the comparison of those two fights are obvious: penn wanted to crush pulver, and faber just wanted to win. faber could have finished him off, but chose not to. if you want to walk around with your head up your ass, that's your problem."

"I thought the fights were good. Not sure if I agree with the idea that Faber and Pulvers fight was "rigged"......Pulver is not old as some suggest, that is just silly.

I love to see these posts by many who probably have never fought (either in the the street or the ring/octagon)........

Anyway, Urijah is well rounded and I would not count Jens out just yet. Urijah had the best test in opponents yet in the form of Jens......"

But if you don't believe that, how can you think he could touch Penn, who completely manhandled Pulver? Ahhh, you're just a bunch of girls anyway - sh!t for brains with your heads up Faber's ass."

I am thinking of joiningthe sport when i turn either 19 or 20, and he and Mirko 'CroCop' Fillipovic are my favorite fighters, they are the electrified fighters that have pushed me to train for the sport."

"Okay, losers, first read my post before attacking me. I never said Faber wasn't good, I said the fight was pathetic because he could have taken Pulver out but chose to hug him instead. Maybe their baby will be the ultimate fighter smile

Pulver used to be great, but age has caught him, that's just a fact. If you saw Penn whip him, you'd understand. If you didn't, just shut up until you know what you're talking about."

"Faber is pushing to get to 145, his natural fighting weight should be closer to 135. I don't think he should even try the 155 class. However I do think he is one of the most exciting fighters in the game and deserves everything he gets. He is as good as BJ in his weight group and more exciting. He is one of my favorites to watch."

"Ten pounds is a lot of weight for a small 145 pounder...if he were to bump up to fight Penn at 155 he would be giving up size. Now if they met in the middle to fight and exhibition fight that would be interesting. My money goes to Faber, he is way too dominant."

The kick in the balls probably took some fight out of Pulver, but that kid has what it takes and I would like to see him really tested against BJ, but since he really doesn't have to, why should he. BJ is a true champ and if Faber wants to really prove his talent, then he knows what he has to do!"

"Perhaps there is some merit to fighting outside your natural weight; I do not see it. Jen’s did it. He had to. Urijah has not. I would agree the Urijah and Marcus Hicks would be an interesting match. If being “washed up”, meaning older and slower, a normal natural process, is at issue, perhaps class should not only consider weight, but age. I think a 40’s and 50’s classes would provide some rich entertainment. At Urijah’s age I was my fastest, most flexible, but maybe more powerful now."

"Now if he were to move up a weight class and into the UFC (highly possible with him having a wrestler background and all, he probably cuts weight just to make 145) he would be in the middle of the toughest weight division (155 lbs) in the world at the UFC. Just watch the Tyson Griffin fight to put into perspective the talent the UFC has. Griffin was only 2 - 0 when he beat Faber. He is on the climb for a title shot now but so are 5 other fighters."

"Yes, I do remember Pulver getting tagged in UFC 63, that's the same one where BJ was pummeled by a bigger/stronger Matt Hughes. That's why BJ dropped to 155 where he is an excellent fighter, but just a good one at 170. BJ is way to big for Faber, if size were more similar, that would be a hell of match. While the UFC has the more elite fighters in weight classes that they offer, I wouldn't disrespect the WEC champs at 145 or 135, IMO they can hold up to ANY challengers in their weight class."

"That Faber went to Hilo to train with BJ, could that possibly be because BJ has fought Pulver twice? NO, that could not possibly be, could it?"

"Uriah is a small 145 and he doesn't even cut weight. Him fighting at BJ Penn's weight is not going to happen."

"All of you guys are crazy talking about Faber vs. Penn. Would it be a great match, hell yeah, but I think even Faber knows Penn is out of his league. Case in point, Faber flew from California to Hilo, Hawaii in order to train with BJ Penn for the fight with Pulver. All I know is when I'm training, I'm fighting someone better than me to make me better. Who did Faber choose?? Yeah that's right BJ "The Prodigy" Penn!!!"

"Faber is a small 145 pounder, for him to + 10lbs just to fight BJ would be stupid, if BJ is the prodigy, let him drop 10 and fight Faber at his weight, that would silence WEC naysayers such as (drew) but probably not, they don't have the intelligence to STFU."

"Faber was the man that night!! Faber would beat the crap out of penn and sherk!!"

"The fight did look rigged. Pulver kept looking at the clock and as someone else said, it looked like he never punched hard. I was very disappointed."

"Are you guys really comparing him to BJ PENN?? that prodigy right now is in a different league than Faber... ppl these days.... ridiculous"

"hell yea, cant wait.....and i wish BJ would stand with Urijah like he did the last guy!! either way, BJ couldn't hang with him......Urijah just proved to everyone in MMA that he is the best fighter pound-for-pound out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"PREDETERMINED?????? is this guy crazy who's saying this???? wow, i dont think he watched the fight!!!!! Faber rocked his world from the get-go, the reason Pulver was just sitting back is because he didnt know where the f*ck he was, why you think he kept constantly looking at the clock, anticipation of when the f*ck he could go home and not get his world rocked anymore!!!!!! Pulver just has the most solid chin pound-for-pound out of anyone, and yes more than Lidell(chuckle)!!!!!!!"

"to all BJ Penn fans who think he would destroy Uriah, first of all uriah would smash him right now, and second, start talkin about BJ losing 10lbs instead of Uriah gaining 10..."

"I am diappointed in the fight because I think this fight was pedetermined, I never seen Jens throw one hard left punch that is what he is famous for. Whenver he could choke him out he just laid back very casually, Uriah is the face of wec and they are not going to let him lose and jens also knew that and went along with it. Once you start predetermining fight no one is going to watch WEC anymore. The fight right before the main event was a real fight, the one fans want to watch."

"In the opening sentence the word should be "dominant;" "dominate" is the verb form of the word."
