The Art of Politics, Patriotism

The California Department of Justice building has become ground zero over a collection of artwork that critics have attacked for being ‘anti-American.’ The most controversial painting depicts the U.S. flag in the shape of the United States being flushed down a toilet.

Thursday night the debate was elevated to new heights as more than 600 hundred people gathered to both support and oppose the display titled “A Creative Merger: Artists & Lawyers”.

Law enforcement officers stood in between the two sides to keep the peace, with emotions running high at times.

On one side were those who felt the controversial artwork was not appropriate for display in a public building that is supported by taxpayer funding.

Move America Forward in conjunction with Sacramento radio talk show host, Mark Williams of KFBK 1530, put together the “I LOVE AMERICA” art exhibit on the sidewalks in front of Attorney General Lockyer’s offices.  The purpose was to show what they called a ‘pro-American alternative’ to the controversial exhibit inside.

After Move America Forward announced their plans for the event, anti-war protestors put out a statement saying they would counter with their own protest.  And both sides turned out in force.

Move America Forward’s supporters sang the national anthem, chanted “USA, USA, USA” and performed the pledge of allegiance.

“It dumbfounds me that the State Attorney General would sponsor an anti-American art exhibit and put it on display in a taxpayer funded facility,” said Melanie Morgan, Chairman of Move America Forward.

“Taxpayers should not be forced to endorse messages that seek to undermine our nation and the men and women serving in our military,” Morgan explained.

On hand to support Move America Forward’s efforts was Deborah Johns of Northern California Marine Moms.  Johns filed a hate crime charge against the Stephen and Virginia Pearcy after they erected a display of a U.S. soldier hanged from a noose with an American flag crumpled into a helmet to represent the soldier’s head.

The effigy included a sign reading “Bush Lied, I Died.”

Johns expressed her disgust that Lockyer would sponsor a display that included artwork by Pearcy that degraded the country and the American flag.
“How come the Attorney General supports that, but does not support an exhibit of art that supports our troops serving in Iraq?” asked Johns.  Her son, a Recon Marine, returned last October from a tour of duty in Iraq.

On the other side were supporters of the exhibit who said they supported the exhibit.  They chanted “Bush Lied, Soldiers Died,” and expressed their view that critics of the display were trying to censor the artwork.  Several times their chants of “Sieg Heil” rang out in unison.

“I’m out here for freedom of speech.  Just because art doesn’t say what you want it to say doesn’t mean it should be disallowed,” explained Velvet McKenzie of Antelope.

Those who support the exhibit also explained that they believed anti-war displays were important and that it was appropriate to showcase them in public buildings.

“Lies got us into this war.  I am out here protesting the war, and now some people are trying to infringe upon the Constitution,” said Al Ezell with the group Veterans for Peace.

The State Attorney General says that no taxpayer funds are involved in the displaying of the exhibit, however the exhibit was co-sponsored by Lockyer and the California Arts Council which receives millions of dollars each year in taxpayer funds.  One of the private sponsors cited by the California Arts Council as a financier of the display, River City Bank, demanded that their name be removed from the list of sponsors.  They say they provided no funding for the exhibit.

In the press release announcing the exhibit, Lockyer and the California Arts Council were listed as the co-sponsors of the event.  Lockyer praised the “style and beauty” of the pieces which included an image of Lady Justice shackled in a prison cell with blood streaming down and a ghostly hooded soldier from the Abu Ghraib prison scandal.

Another image features a Palestinian refugee behind barbed wires with the heading “Stop U.S. Financed Genocide in the Middle East.”

To contrast what they called ‘anti-military’ and ‘anti-American’ art, Move America Forward also displayed several hundred pieces of patriotic artwork sent from around the nation and as far away as Alberta, Canada.

One piece included a five-foot iron replica of the 9/11 memorial displayed in the fields of Shanksville, Pennsylvania following the crash of Flight 93 on September 11, 2003.

Dozens of images of the American flag and representations of U.S. troops were drawn or painted by schoolchildren who participated in the program.

Other pieces included exquisite oil paintings featuring a slice of Americana.

Red, white and blue were on display in just about every piece of art in the “I LOVE AMERICA” display.

Some were critical of the displays.

Ken White of Elk Grove said he came out to protest the event because he said he was, “afraid since it was a staged event that only the right-wing would be represented.”

As the afternoon turned to evening things settled down as many of those who came out to protest the Move America Forward sponsored event departed.

With the decibel level having dropped, Move America Forward’s Executive Director, Mark Washburn, invited participants in the crowd to speak.

One of those people was Beverly Hahn whose two sons serve in the military; her son Chris serves in the U.S. Navy, and her son Nathan is a Marine.

“I came out today because I love America,” she explained.

“I know my sons are doing their service for America, and I want to be here to support them as my own service,” said Hahn.

Supporters of Move America Forward’s event came not just from Sacramento, but throughout the state, and even a handful came in from other states.

On hand with a banner reading “Liberalism is a mental disorder” was Tim Buehler of the High School Conservative Clubs of America.

He explained that he made the drive up from the Bay Area to, “support the military and the war against terrorism.”

Buehler said he was compelled to, “take a stand for our country and to support our troops in the Middle East.”

He also said he wanted to “stand against anti-Americanism being expressed by the Hollywood Left.”

Another Bay Area attendee was George Schaefer who heard about the rally on talk radio.  He drove a 1941 Dodge ambulance that he restored as a memorial to his brother-in-law who died in the D-Day invasion of World War II as a member of the 20th division, 175th Battalion, K-company.

He said he was bothered by the fact that the artwork critical of the nation and the military was in the Department of Justice facility.

“People who made that garbage have the right to do it, but not in a public building,” said Schaefer.

That was a sentiment echoed by Pamela Barnett who served in the U.S. Army for 11 years.

She carried a sign that read: “Don’t use my money for Un-American Art.”

Move America Forward said the artwork submitted to the “I LOVE AMERICA” exhibit would be shipped to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan along with coffee and cookies.

The organizers have sent over 6-tons of coffee and thousands of boxes of cookies as part of the “Coffee and Cookies for Our Troops” program they operate in conjunction with Sacramento roaster, Cornerstone Coffee.

Reader's Comments
"Hey Rick, did you notice which way the police were facing while they were standing between the two groups? They face the direction of the threat of violence, which means they were looking at the left wingers.

Us conservatives don't know what the front of a police horse looks like. We know that the back end looks like lefties, only closer."

"One thing I noted at the demonstration was the incredible hatred that was shown towards the "liberals" by the art protesters. I brought a German friend of mine to see what a US demonstration looks like, and as we stood on the "left" side of the building entrance, we were met with nasty cat-calls and gestures from the "right" side. My friend wanted to leave immediately, and wondered when they'd start the book burning."

"I think it's great that the left should be allowed to show it's urban bigotry and blatant racism against "rednecks" and people of the agrarian sector of our Great Country, I mean really, do they grow their vegetables on their 10th floor studios next too thier pot plants? Or does the food they eat come from some-one who is more likely to wear Cowboy boots than Gucci."

""What good does it do to bash America when ultimately it serves the needs of our enimies and undermines our troops?" Again, you're equating "bashing" the President's policies with "bashing" America and the troops, which is a logical fallacy. Furthermore, the President's policy of going to war against sovereign nations based on lies is not a longstanding policy that was in place before Bush became President."

"You are speaking of the policies that have been in place long before Bush. Check History; not the revisionist version that the media and Universities are spouting. What good does it do to bash America when ultimately it serves the needs of our enimies and undermines our troops? I may not like the war either, but I don't assist the enemy in my dissent. I hope you don't beat your children into submission. That's what many are doing to America. I agree that we need to do better as a Nation."

""My point was to say that if you don't like America, there are other options" That's another common spin that the right uses on the left--that is, attempting to equate criticism of the administration's policies with "hating America." Do you hate your children and leave them behind when they do something wrong? Or, do you try to make them better people because you love them and care about their well-being?"

"OK, what's: the extent it everyone? Hmmm, interesting. Your right CJ I stooped to a cliche too. This from someone who is calling fellow Americans "Nazis & Intolerant" I am amazed that things are so clear to you. I pray you are shown more grace & sympathy than you dole out. My point was to say that if you don't like America, there are other options. But then I guess it doesn't really matter what I say, you could twist it."

""If your not happy, try the Congo." That's a cliche that the right uses all the time to dismiss criticisms from the left. It's ironic that the right values democracy only to the extent it everyone thinks alike."

"Let's wake up people! Put downs and cliches are for the feeble minded. Seems the theme of the decade is to DENY to other what you DEMAND for yourself. We must work together or we all die seperately. Compromise does not mean defeat, kids! We need to work for America, not for our ideals. Just b/c America makes some mistakes doesn't mean you throw out the baby with the bathwater. Count your blessings. If your not happy, try the Congo. God help us all!"

"Typical liberal mantra; free speech without any restrictions unless of course it 'offends' them as in being 'Pro- America'.

They always seem to find their voice whenever they have their heads in the toilet like the swine they resemble or in this case Bill 'No shame' Locklear.

Their new slogan could be "No Hate Left Behind"."

"I have no problem with anti-American art being created or displayed. Displaying it in a taxpayer funded government building, however, is simply wrong. Do you think Christians would be allowed to display pro-Christian art in that building? Or pro-life groups? Not a chance and the ACLU would have them in court the instant they tried."

"There is a price for freedom. If freedom is important to you it seems you would support our troops in Iraq and you would stand with America instead of against her.
Are you not biteing the hand that feeds you when you stand with Anti-American artwork?"

"this guy Lockyer has never been taught respect, and was most likely raised without a father. I say this act of posting ANTI- AMERICAN 'artwork' in the Dept.of Justice Building during WAR TIME is TREASON and should be prosecuted as such. What has this great American, George Schaefer done to deserve this kind of disrespect of his brother who DIED fighting for the United States of America? -and other Veterans?-what did they do to get all this disrespect from the Department of Justice?"

"I am afraid this "art" exhibit is akin to journalism today. As the MAF team prepared for departure to Iraq, I caught a television report featuring Melanie Morgan and some bozo who calls himself a journalist his opening statement "there are no ground rules in journalism". He could not even be polite enough to shut up and let Melanie speak."

"I think it's appropriate that schoolchildren contributed works to the Move America Forward rally considering the 'art' that was being protested against. Pearcy's poster should not qualify as art, political or otherwise, and be in an art exhibit. It is amateurish at best, but mostly just laughable. If a work is going to be displayed as art some effort and talent should be involved. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but just because someone says it’s art doesn’t’ make it so."
-> Posted by NoDeuce / Aug 01, 2005
"Pete hit the nail right on the head. The rally wasn't about "Loving America" or "Supporting the Troops." It was about rallying against liberals and anyone who questions Bush's policies. It was also about spinning the left's criticism of Bush's immoral war into a criticism of the left's spirituality. It's interesting how the radical right seems to shift every political discussion into a religious discussion. Why can't the right stick to the issues?"

"The spirit of this event wasn't "We love America", it was "We hate liberals". MAF organizes a rally to support America and the troops, and then unveils signs like "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder". What kind of message does this send to our troops? Do you think everyone in the military is a conservative? If you want to have a "we hate liberals" rally fine, but don't hide behind the troops and insult our brave men and women in uniform that do not share your political persuasion."

"We attended the 'I Love America Rally' and it was as different as night to day in the contrast of the 'spirts' resignating between the two groups. The 'bash-Bush' anti-America gang reeked with HATE. While the 'pro-America' support our troops group permeated with LOVE! We choose LOVE!
We love America - the true America."

"Liberals always insist that they love America, but they can never seem to point out exactly what it is they love about it. Whereas most Americans can simply say, "I love my country," and leave it at that, Liberals always have to follow that statement with a "BUT..." But what?

I arrived at the AG,s office about four thirty. I immediatly knew which side i belonged. Hint, it was the side with all the flags. "Public buildings are exctly the place for political speech provided we do not discriminate based on viewpoint or turn politics into a religion so that public buildings become temples for flag worship."

Well, your point does not apply here. The Attorney General has ONLY displayed works that were anti-American and anti-military.

So, try again with your reasoning, please."

"We cannot have a republic if government is a civil religion that we cannot criticize. If the flag is a holy symbol of our civil religion, then we have a theocracy and the first amemndment (free speech and the establishment clause) has been repealed.

Public buildings are exctly the place for political speech provided we do not discriminate based on viewpoint or turn politics into a religion so that public buildings become temples for flag worship."

"Although I could not attend this rally, I am pleased to note that my art work did!

I am not surprised the anti-Bush/Troops/America crowd showed up armed only with recycled 60's catchphrases and chants. Liberals cherish tolerance and diversity, yet why is it they violently oppose any one who actually has a divergent opinion?

The best of America's best choose to stand between us and evil, shedding their blood to keep us safe, and no words of appreciation can ever be enough."

"Well Done Mr. Williams & my fellow patriots! Although I could not be there, I told friends about the event, and several were there to stir up the foaming-at-the-mouth libs and even pray publicly for revival and continued blessing on our great Nation. God bless you in your good work of standing up to these leftist psychopaths who are trying to revise history, warp the minds of our youth, and dissolve the very moral foundation of my beloved country that I served very proudly in our armed forces."
