Work gets underway to convert 3rd Street from I to J to two-way
Published: October 8, 2008

The City of Sacramento Department of Transportation is converting 3rd Street from I to J Street from one-way to two-way to improve access to Old Sacramento. Construction will continue through mid November.

The 3rd Street conversion is one of the seven first priority streets for conversion, as approved by the Mayor and City Council in July 2007 as part of the Central City Two-Way Conversion Project.

¨ 19th Street (H Street to Broadway, from three lanes to two lanes with bike lanes, completed)
¨ 21st Street (I Street to W Street, from three lanes to two lanes with bike lanes, completed)
¨ N Street (21st Street to 28th Street, to two-way, starting soon)
¨ 3rd Street (I Street to J Street, to two-way, underway)
¨ J Street (30th Street to Alhambra Boulevard, to two-way)
¨ 9th Street (E Street to I Street, to two-way)
¨ 10th Street (E Street to I Street, to two-way)

The study’s objectives were to enhance neighborhood livability, promote a pedestrian friendly and safe environment, help revitalize the city and support a balanced transportation system.

"The One Way streets in this city are the only streets that I drive on. They allow traffic to flow to and from the freeways. Changing them to 2 Way streets is only going to make the traffic delays worse and further frustrate those of us who live and work downtown. This was a stupid move. If they want to do something, eliminate the railroad tracks that halts traffic on every single East/West street from I to Broadway simultaneously for 15 - 20 minutes five times a day. That would be a smart move."
