SACRAMENTO—The city of Sacramento has canceled a free public showing of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” after receiving complaints about scenes that some consider racist.
Some Asian American activists criticized Vice Mayor Steve Cohn’s choice of the 1961 classic starring Audrey Hepburn because of Mickey Rooney’s stereotypical depiction of Mr. Yunioshi, a bumbling Japanese neighbor.
The film was to have played Saturday night as part of the city’s Screen on the Green movie series.
Cohn says the series will instead air “Ratatouille,” an animated film featuring rats in the kitchen of a French restaurant, to air instead.
Earlier in the week, Cohn had apologized for his selection and said he would delete Rooney’s scenes. But he says doing that would make the movie too hard to follow.

Another example of political correctness gone mad. It's a character, one character, made up by the writer, director and made real by Mickey Rooney. It's not intended to characature all Japanese people. Brother!"
