The City of Sacramento Department of Transportation has approved a longer work day for the City’s slurry seal contractor to help ensure hundreds of streets are resurfaced during a shortened construction season. Slurry seal is a preventive maintenance procedure, which can extend the life of a street by five to seven years.
This year the City postponed all street maintenance and repair work during the Caltrans’ Fix I-5 Project so as not to further impact City traffic. Additionally, this year’s slurry seal projects is one the largest in recent history: a $5 million project to slurry seal 243 lane miles within a construction season that has been reduced by one month.
In an effort to get the streets due for a slurry seal done before the season ends in October, the contractor has been aggressively scheduling streets and notifying residents, and in a few cases, did not have time to complete a neighborhood as anticipated. The contractor will be re-notifying those residents about a new schedule and return to do the work this season.
The City has also requested that the contractor adopt an achievable schedule and the City also is allowing the contractor to extend their work day to 4:30 p.m. instead of ending it at 4 p.m. “While we realize crews may still be working when residents return home from work, we ask for their understanding as we try to alleviate the back log,” said Linda Tucker, spokesperson for the City’s Department of Transportation. “In the end, the streets will be like new.”
