Sacramento, Calif. – Sacramento City Council last night approved the use of $1.5 million in Proposition 40 funds to assist the City in building the first phase of the Docks Promenade Parkway. The 20 foot wide pedestrian and bicycle path – extending from O to R streets – will expand the existing promenade near the Tower Bridge and provide for a new park along the waterfront. It’s expected that the project will get underway early next year. 

“Development of the Sacramento riverfront is a chief priority for the City,” said Beth Tincher, senior project manager for Economic Development. “This action was monumental in providing the necessary resource to build an important public walk and bikeway that will add an additional connection to downtown as well as extra recreational opportunities for the city and the region.”

With city council’s action, staff will develop final design plans by the end of this year, and construction will begin in February 2009. 

The Docks promenade project is an important catalyst project for the future development of the riverfront.  It will allow for continued momentum to attain the vision outlined in the Sacramento Riverfront Master Plan by developing the waterfront into a vibrant mixed used neighborhood adjacent to a regional recreational facility along the Sacramento River.

“The promenade project will add to the riverfront once it’s complete in the spring 2010,” Tincher said. “Long term, however, it will be a front door of our Docks area project that include the development of approximately 30-acres of land along the Sacramento River and immediately adjacent to the promenade.”
