Urban Farm Stand Opens in Alkali Flat
Published: April 15, 2008

The Urban Farm Stand in Alkali Flat will bring convenient access to fresh locally grown produce (both conventional and organic) to a neighborhood that lacks grocery stores. This weekly event will also include fun activities for kids, local musicians and performing artists, as well as information about nutrition and community resources. The Urban Farm Stand project also incorporates an education and youth involvement component through the participation of youth interns that will gain knowledge of the benefits of fresh produce to overall health and disease prevention, as well as gaining important job skills. 2008 marks the Urban Farm Stand’s second year in operation. It will operate Tuesdays from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m., starting May 6th and continuing through October 28th located at J. Neely Johnson Park, 516 11th Street, Sacramento 95814. (Between E & F Streets.)

The Alkali/Mansion Flat area has not had a full service grocery store since the Albertson’s store on 24th and F Street closed down years ago. There is little to no access to fresh produce in the area. Area residents include many single parents and transit dependent individuals and families that face difficult challenges in getting to supermarkets across town.  By providing convenient access to fresh fruits and vegetables, residents will be better able to incorporate these foods into their diets, resulting in improved health.

"I am very glad to see that the conventional farmers are not being excluded from marketing at this site."
