"Ugly Betty" sparks comments

SACRAMENTO (AP) - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says the state needs to increase tax incentives to movie and TV studios as a way to keep them from moving productions out of state.

He says other states like Florida, Louisiana and New Mexico are offering incentives that are luring studios productions away at the cost of tens of thousands of jobs.

The governor’s comments were sparked by plans to move production of the popular “Ugly Betty” show from Los Angeles to New York, where there are new tax incentives.

A group that promotes the film and television business in Los Angeles says production was down 23% in the first quarter of this year compared to last year.
