MODESTO—The Modesto home of Laci and Scott Peterson is on the market.

Modesto Resident Penny Fleischman said “I’d rather put up a tent under the creek like the rest of the bums.” 50-year Covena Avenue resident Penny Fleischman can’t understand why anyone would want to buy the home where many presume Scott Peterson killed his wife Laci. “I feel terribly disinterested in that place myself. I’ve never walked over there even.”

But neighbor Robert Rubio has been by the house many times. He and his dog Bubba searched for Laci when she disappeared in December 2002. Now with Laci’s husband on death row for her killing, Rubio is amazed Prudential California has listed the 1770 square foot home for just under $380,000. “I think that’s really too much for the house”, he said.

REMAX Realtor Patrick Wallace disagreed. “The price is not too high”, he said. Wallace, who raised his children five doors down from the Peterson home, said the house has a good floorplan, newly remodeled kitchen and is located in a strong neighborhood with good schools. And since there is no evidence Scott killed Laci there, “It’s not a stigma for the neighborhood and I don’t believe even in the short term that it’s going to be a stigma for the property itself.”

Thousands of people have visited the house over the years, leaving cards and flowers. Now there is absolutely none of that. And that is one thing neighbors can agree on. The hope that it will stay like this. “This neighborhood is a very peaceful neighborhood until this happened”, said Rubio.
