Declining home values to lower tax bill for some homeowners
Homeowners could be getting some good news about their property taxes

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) _ Some homeowners throughout the East Bay could be getting some good news about their property taxes.

With home values falling, tax officials say more than 100,000 homeowners in Alameda and Contra Costa counties may see their property taxes fall this year.

Contra Costa County officials say they’re expecting the assessed value will decline for 65,000 to 75,000 homes.

In Alameda County, it’s expected 30,000 to 40,000 homes will see declines.

The lower values mean homeowners won’t have to pay as much in taxes, but it also means that the counties will be collecting less property tax revenue.

Contra Costa County is anticipating losing about $40 million in tax revenue, while Alameda County could lose about $20 million in taxes.
