Press release: Million Muslim March
Mayor, mosque and talk radio host to sponsor
Million Muslim March
(Sacramento, California; Friday June 17, 2005) Lodi, California Mayor John Beckman and Sacramento radio talker Mark Williams today said that they are joining forces with the Lodi Muslim Mosque to stage what has been unofficially dubbed The Million Muslim March
In a joint announcement during the Mark Williams Show on KFBK Radio (1530 AM) tonight the mayor and Williams called on all Muslims in Northern California to join them, and the membership of the mosque in a march and demonstration by Muslims “to denounce acts of terror committed or contemplated in their name or the name of Allah.”
Mayor Beckman said that the march would begin at the Lodi mosque at 3:00 PM Friday July 22 following regular Friday afternoon prayers, and would conclude with a demonstration featuring a variety of speakers at Lodi City Hall. The mosque serves some 2,000 Lodi area Muslims.
Williams has been attempting to rally Northern California Muslims to speak out against terrorism for more than three years now said that “this is a first step on a long road by Muslims to retake their faith from extremists who grip Islam by the throat.” The popular radio personality added “All of Northern California should turn out in support of Muslims who are now speaking up and denouncing the extremists like bin Laden, and domestic apologists for bin Laden.”
Mayor Beckman says that his city’s Break Through Project, started in 1998 to combat hate following a cross burning incident, will coordinate the march and demonstration with the mosque.
Event: Million Muslim March
