Sacramento Bee is Ignoring News
UPDATE: How does this story compare to the violence displayed in the NBA on Friday. Is Rudulph's behavior a result of the belief system of the 'rap culture'? We'll discuss this in the morning on 1380 KTKZ.
Craig DeLuz, the most amazing part of this story is the non-story it has become for the Sacramento Bee.
For the past week we have tried to contact someone at the Bee to cover this story. They are ignoring it entirely, why? Try running a search on "Joseph Rudulph" at the Bee's site, it shows NOTHING...absolutely nothing.
I had Ken Grubbs (Sac Union Ex. Editor) on my show last Thursday, I mentioned this event in Corvallis and the next day the Sacramento Union had a reporter on the beat and the column that you offering your blog thread.
KCRA, News 10 and 1380 KTKZ have all covered this story - but the Sacramento Bee has REFUSED to report a word on it. They are openly ignoring news because it doesn't fit their ideology or agenda - hard to figure.
Things to keep in mind when discussing this story (non-story) in Sacramento...
What's 'good for the goose should be good for the Gander'. This illustrates the problem with hate-crime legislation. It can be applied 'selectively', making some victims 'more equal than others'.
A government that is supposed to be color blind in legal matters (and gender-blind), is also supposed to identify and selectively prosecute based on race, ethnic and gender concerns? Impossible without a bias or agenda taking the lead.
Another thought; is the media afraid of playing up this story because it would put the spotlight on the soldier's story and underscore his sacrifice? Especially when you compare the soldier's sacrifice to the life and opportunity of the 19 year-old graduate from Natomas!

If This Is Not a Hate Crime… What Is?
Imagine a group of white men verbally assailing a white female for being married to a black man. Then imagine one of those white men uttering racial slurs at the black man prior to knocking him unconscious and fleeing the scene with the other white men. Would perpetrator of this assault be charged with a hate crime? You bet!
So, why is it any different when the assailants are black and the victim is white? That is the question many are asking in regards to a racially motivated incident involving former Natomas High School Football standout, Joseph Rudolph. He (a black man) assaulted a national guardsman (a white man) who was home on leave from the war in Iraq. (Click Here for the Story.)
Am I mistaken or does there appear to be a double standard when it comes to the application of a law that is meant to reduce hatred for people based on race, religion, national origin and (in California's case) sexual preference and gender identity.
By not charging this Joseph Rudolf with a hate crime, we are saying that our toleration of hate, depends on who is the target of that hate. In other words, if you shout racial slurs at a black man (because he is black), physically assault him, burn down his house or in any other way violate his civil rights, you deserve a special place in hell. But if you do the same to a white man (because he is white) somehow this hate is more tolerable, because we will not provide the same protections to him as outlined in hate crimes laws.
If hate crime laws are not to protect everyone, then all they will do is precipitate more hate. And proponents of these lopsided applications are communicating that it is more acceptable to hate heterosexual, Christian white men than black men, gay men or Muslim men. Hate is hate! And if we are going to punish it, let’s punish it equally.
What bothers me even more is that I have been accused by some blacks of being an "Uncle Tom" for even daring to mention this injustice. Not that I care about what others think of me. But what does that say about how far we still have to go in truly coming together as a people?
I guess some don't believe that Justice should be colorblind.

Basketbrawl of Culture
What we experienced Friday night in Detroit, Michigan is the ‘religion’ of the “rap culture” expressing itself upon an NBA game and its fans. The difference for this worship ceremony, it was expressed from both sides of the baseline. The crowd became as violent as the players and the ultimate ugly leaving America struggling for answers.
I’m filling in for Laura Ingraham for TRN Monday morning (Listen in California: 9-12PM on 1380 KTKZ in Sacramento, 6-9AM on 870 KRLA in Los Angeles, 1170 KCBQ in San Diego, 1220AM in San Fran). What follows are my talking points for an open and honest discussion on the riot. Not a racial tirade, but an expose on the religion of the inner-city of America. Its worship is violence and its music is rap.
These NBA players (men) have not grown up. They are still boys in search of their fathers, still 'hung-up' at a childish view of life and law...trying to calm the ache by looking for the satisfaction of the frustration that haunts them their entire life. Many fans the same, never leaving the boyish status, so they storm the court looking for a fight (or a rich lawsuit payout), throw beer, popcorn and sodas from the stands.
NBA has one of the highest ‘out-of-wedlock’ birth rates in professional sports. I was in Cleveland when the Cavaliers’ center, Shawn Kemp, was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Kemp (at that time) had 11 children to 11 different women, in 11 different cities. This is the ‘fatherless’ culture of the professional athlete, especially inside of the NBA.
They have grown up solving their problems with violence – literal fights. It is the answer for all that frustrates them or ‘disses’ them in life. The final answer: violence. A true survival of the fittest.
The basketball (sports) business never offers true consequence for illegal or inappropriate behavior. They make millions and are catered to on an hourly basis. When they step out of line, they face small repercussions but no real accountability or consequences.
The culture of “rap music” (closely revered as a religion) sings their style. The ‘religion’ of the inner-city has its own form of worship music. Listen to this music and you hear the hell that many of these ‘man-boys’ are raised in and through.
This is NOT just African-American (black), it is being repeated in upper-suburbia (white) through out the country. Mimicked or imitated, they “up-and-outers’ desire to be associated with the ‘down-and-outers’ frustration, fear and violence. From clothing, music and language…it is a distant worship of the ‘inner-city religion’. Reason, the attempt to fill the void of a missing father (or a busy father) and the frustration that follows.
Why couldn’t Indiana's Ron Artest (and the other 'professionals') respond with ‘professional anger’ by pointing out the guy in the stands and NOT going into the stands to fight? Because a majority know no other measure…and they have never had to be accountable for their behavior. What does it mean to act like a mature man and civil human being when you have never seen one as a family role model as a young boy?
Look at the comments of the NBA commissioner David Stern; "The actions of the players involved wildly exceeded the professionalism and self-control that should fairly be expected from NBA players," David Stern said in a statement, adding that the league must not "allow our sport to be debased by what seem to be declining expectations."
This ‘macho’ athlete has its roots in: trash talking, mock dancing after every tackle, steroids and chemical usage and media’s hero worship. How many times have you watched as college football player makes a big play, sacks the quarterback for a 10 yard lost and then goes into a self worshipping "dance and mock" routine - while his teams trails by 5 touchdowns in the fourth quarter? What does team mean? The players become the sport rather the games played.
What we have is a culture that has lost its reference point - for boys its Fatherhood; "my Dad". What we are left with are young men frustrated and violent, turning to a game that boys play well but are not ready for prime players in life itself.
Boys will be boys…and they stay that way if there is no father to guide them into manhood.

The Fortune of Education in Sacramento? (Update)
One of my educational hero's; Margaret Fortune, of St. Hope Academy has resigned.
Fortune, along with Kevin Johnson's Hope Academy Institution, is responsible for the salvation of Sacramento High School. Her announcement was a surprise today. News 10 has the announcement.
We will have Margaret Fortune on the morning show at 8AM for a personal interview. I'm guessing we have lost another champion of inner-city educational success due to the muscle of the teacher's union. We'll find out in the morning at 8AM.
Hogue Show on 1380 KTKZ (5-9AM Weekdays)
UPDATE (11/19/04 at 8:45AM)
The Bee had it wrong, Fortune is NOT quitting...she's actually on the offensive!
Margaret is leaving to oversee a position with the Charter School Association of California. She will be leading the cause for the "No Child Left Behind" educational campaign of the Bush Administration to help in creating MORE chartered schools in California.
These are non-union chartered schools!
Margaret is a target, but she is going on the offensive. Look for Fortune to be a national figure in the next few years, as chartered schools in California will reach the hundreds if the Teacher's Union can be controlled.
Fortune informed the KTKZ morning audience that Governor Schwarzenegger MIGHT be brought into the effort to limit the Teacher's Union to allow for MORE chartered schools in the state.
Fortune is taking her success at Sacramento High to the entire state - teacher's unions beware, her comes your worst nightmare...and a child's brightest hope in education.
We'll be re-airing the Fortune interview next week on the Hogue Show, stay tuned to 1380 KTKZ.

Natomas Grad’s Racial Attack of Soldier and Wife
The lead story from the morning show on Thursday...
Here is an update on the Joseph Rudulph (19 year-old from Natomas) incident in Corvallis, Oregon. If you're not familiar, it's not entirely your fault. To my knowledge, the only news media in this city to cover the story has been 1380 KTKZ and News 10.
Here is the latest from the Corvallis Gazette-Times tonight.
The most powerful statement comes from a member of the military; "I don't want anyone telling me who I can hang out with downtown, let alone who I can marry," Jacques said. "He's dodged bullets, he's been hit with IEDs (improvised explosive devices), he has lost four comrades in action. To come home and have this happen ..."
Here we have a 19 year-old living in the lap of luxury, riding a full scholarship to OSU to play football in the PAC-10 and he decides to attack a soldier (and his wife) who is off on leave from the war in Iraq. Reason for the attack, Rudulph is black and he didn't like the fact that the soldier (who is white) had a black wife...he race baited the wife and sucker-punched the US Reservists.
You might ask, "Where is the local news media in Sacramento?"...good question!
I just did a search at the Sacramento Bee and HERE is the result of searching under "Joseph Rudulph".
